Moosewood, Inc. is a collectively owned business with nineteen members who share responsibilities and participate in the various jobs necessary to run what has grown from a very small natural foods restaurant to become a larger and more diversified company. Most members of the Collective have worked together for at least 15 years, and some since the restaurant's inception in 1973. The restaurant is further staffed by a talented and dedicated group of employees whom we truly appreciate and without whom we could not operate.

With our emphasis on healthful natural foods cuisine, Moosewood Restaurant has operated successfully for thirty-three years and has been acclaimed as a driving force in the world of creative vegetarian cooking. Moosewood was named one of the thirteen most influential restaurants of the 20th Century by Bon Appetit magazine. We started in an era when many alternative businesses began, and we feel incredibly grateful to have endured, thrived and had a positive impact.

Moosewood is located in downtown Ithaca, NY. Ithaca is nestled in the hills at the southern end of Cayuga Lake, and stands out among the other towns and small cities in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes region of central New York State. Our restaurant is still in its original home in the Dewitt Mall, a renovated historic brick school building at the corner of Seneca and Cayuga Streets.

The Moosewood Collective has also authored eleven internationally acclaimed cookbooks, with our latest--Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers, published in the fall of 2005. Because we have so many experienced cooks, we are continually crafting new recipes. We're an adventuresome bunch, we love to eat, and never let ourselves get bored when it comes to food.

More recently we've ventured beyond the restaurant, our cookbooks, and our consulting and instructional services, to develop our salad dressings for retail sales. We developed five delightful, zingy, all-organic dressings that are available in natural food stores and supermarkets, at the restaurant, and here from our web site.

We are especially proud to have introduced eight all-organic refrigerated soups, in generous 18-ounce portions, that are now flying off the shelves. In 2003 we launched our line of delectable frozen main-dish entrees. Our manufacturer, Fairfield Farm Kitchens in Brockton, Massachusetts has done a stellar job to put restaurant quality into convenient, organic vegetarian meals you can heat and eat. Our soups and sauces are now available in quantity for cafe, deli and dining services.

Our Cuisine

Our meals are prepared with the freshest produce (organic whenever possible), whole grains, beans, soy, quality herbs and spices, and the finest imported or domestic ingredients available.

Vegetarianism as a life-style choice was a strong influence on the development of the restaurant's repertoire, as well as our commitment to offer the best ingredients in healthful, imaginative whole foods cuisine.

Often, when people decide to become vegetarians or make a commitment to a more healthful diet, they ask "But now, what do I eat?" Through our personal backgrounds, travels, and research, we have explored ethnic recipes and ingredients from around the world. We offer a cuisine that is familiar yet eclectic, and add our own influence by making many traditional dishes more healthful and interesting.

We're happy to see our approach echoed in the changing nutritional guidelines that feature grains, beans, vegetables and fruit as the base of the USDA food pyramid. It's a pleasure to celebrate the delightful flavors and diversity of natural foods in our recipes.

Moosewood Restaurant's constantly changing menu draws inspiration from many sources, from regional American cooking to a wide variety of international and ethnic cuisines that are adapted to our own unique style of cooking. We intentionally change our menu so that the selection of dishes offered at each meal is different from all the other menus that week, or indeed that month. Particularly popular or seasonal items may appear more often, but in new combinations. Our menu planners are blessed with a huge repertoire of soups, salads, main dishes, side dishes, from which to design our daily menus. Special research and attention go into our Sunday night ethnic menus. We also serve fresh fish and seafood, great homemade desserts, and offer natural sodas, fresh juices, coffees, beers, spirits, and a good selection of wines from New York State and beyond.
